Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)
Meaningful Connections: Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy in Michigan
Unbridled Transformations Christian Counseling offers in-person Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy in Michigan using the EAGALA Model. This client-centered, solution-oriented, and evidence-driven approach provides a hands-on therapeutic experience designed to help clients make meaningful connections and discover their own solutions.
EAGALA Model
The EAGALA Model is effective because it embraces the science that humans learn best by doing. Clients are given the space to project and analyze their situations, make connections, and identify solutions through experience.
Because these solutions are personally experienced along with intellectual understanding, they often become deeper, more profound, and longer lasting.

How It Works
The EAGALA Model uses a team approach that includes:
- A Licensed, Credentialed Mental Health Professional
- A Qualified Equine Specialist
- Horses Working with the Client in an Arena or Pasture
All work is done on the ground. Horses are never ridden and are deliberately unhindered, allowing them to interact with the client as they wish. This creates space for the client, with support from professional facilitators, to reflect, project, and make deep connections.
Why Horses?
Horses Respond to Nonverbal Communication
Horses are intelligent prey animals and are highly sensitive to their environment. They naturally respond to body language and nonverbal cues, offering valuable feedback and insight.
Horses Help Build Confidence
Because horses are large and powerful, they provide opportunities to overcome fear and develop confidence. Accomplishing a task with a horse can become a meaningful metaphor for facing other intimidating or overwhelming situations in life.
Horses can influence people in powerful ways. Developing relationships with horses naturally supports work ethic, responsibility, assertiveness, communication, and healthy relationships.
Horses Offer Opportunities for Metaphorical Learning
Like humans, horses are social animals with defined roles, unique personalities, moods, and attitudes. What works with one horse may not work with another. This creates opportunities for clients to reflect on relationships, communication, and patterns in their own lives.
Horses Require Engagement
Working with horses requires physical and mental effort. In a world that often values immediate gratification, horses invite people to stay engaged, present, and committed to the process.
